Jimmy had been a proud patron of the Empire for many years, but his relationship with the theatre went far beyond a name or title. He was one of our greatest champions, a generous supporter and a valued friend who genuinely understood what our theatre means to its volunteers, audiences and the wider community.

Jimmy performed at the Empire on many occasions, bringing his unmistakable warmth, humour and happiness to our stage. He also generously helped us to raise vital funds for the theatre, supporting our work and helping to ensure that the Empire could continue entertaining the community he cared so deeply about.

Speaking about the Empire, Jimmy once said:

“This is such a great little theatre which means so much to the community. It has got a great reputation among the artists who have performed here because everyone is so friendly.”

Those words meant a great deal to everyone involved with the theatre. Jimmy recognised that the Empire is not simply a building or a stage, but a place brought to life by friendship, warmth and a shared love of entertainment. These were qualities Jimmy himself embodied throughout his remarkable life and career.

Born James Mulgrew, Jimmy became one of Britain’s best-loved comedians after first coming to national attention through LWT’s Search for a Star. He went on to star in his own television series, And There’s More, and appeared on television, radio and stages across the country throughout a long and distinguished career.

Behind the famous wellington boots, unforgettable catchphrases and wonderfully warm humour was a kind, thoughtful and deeply generous man. He brought happiness to generations of audiences without ever needing to be cruel or unkind, and his ability to make people laugh was matched by the warmth he showed to everyone he met.

We feel enormously privileged that Jimmy chose to support Blackburn Empire Theatre and proud that he became such an important part of our theatre family.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Jimmy’s wife May, his children, grandchildren, wider family and his many friends at this very sad time.

Thank you, Jimmy, for the laughter, the friendship, the wonderful performances, the money you helped us raise and for always believing in our little theatre.

We would normally say that this is the end of the story.

But Jimmy would probably stop us there and say:

“Come here – there’s more!”

And thanks to the laughter, memories and happiness he leaves behind, there always will be.
