Blackburn Musical Theatre Company present Whistle Down the Wind at Blackburn Empire Theatre

Whistle Down the Wind, the incredibly powerful musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, comes to Blackburn Empire Theatre this April.

Based on the book of the same title by Mary Hayley Bell and later produced as a movie in the hands of Richard Attenborough, Whistle Down the Wind was filmed in the Ribble Valley village of Downham, and starred a cast of local school children alongside Hayley Mills.

Whistle Down the Wind is set in a small, deeply religious town in Louisiana of the 1950s. A poor farming family led by father, Boone, and his three children – Swallow, Brat, and Poor Baby – have recently buried their mother and they are still struggling with the grief.

As Christmas approaches and the family cannot afford any presents or luxuries, the three children are desperate to find something to hold on to and believe in.

Can a stranger help restore their faith in the family unit?

Blackburn Musical Theatre Company chairman, Gary Worthy, said: “Our rehearsals are going really well, we have a fantastically talented cast of local children joining our established adult company.

“Everyone is so committed to doing justice to a powerful story, which thanks to the film is very popular locally.

“We hope you will join us on the journey from East Lancashire’s rolling hills to rural Louisiana.”
