94 Years Young and Still Going Strong

A 94-year-old patron of the Thwaites Empire Theatre is urging people to support a monthly community theatre show as it nears its 10th birthday.

Feniscowles resident, Jim Kendall, a long-time supporter and first-ever member of the crowd-pleasing ‘Monday Club’ is commending the community initiative and urging more locals to join.

The once-a-month gathering, which takes place on the first Monday of each month and serves as a ‘community hub’ for locals, will celebrate its 10th birthday in 2017.

In 2007, Jim Kendall, a member of the Blind Veteran Society and previous theatre volunteer, became the first person to sign up to the ever popular Monday Club with a five-pound note.

Shortly after, The Monday Club rapidly expanded into a social event which sees a number of local acts bring community spirit to the theatre each month.

Jim Kendall, said: “I became the first member of the Monday Club without any expectations. I was unsure of what it was going to become. However, over the past decade The Monday Club has rapidly expanded.

“The acts are fantastic, tea and biscuits are included in the price and its reputation as a cheap afternoon out and a good place to socialise with others has been well earnt.

“The Monday Club is always welcoming new members and I encourage more people to come along for plenty of music and laughs. It’s well worth every-penny.”

Mr Kendall, who celebrated his 90th birthday at the theatre four-years ago, has been heavily involved with the venue over the years, from ushering duties on show nights to helping decorate during times of renovation.

Michael Berry, Chairman of the Thwaites Empire Theatre, said: “We are very grateful for all the time that Jim has kindly dedicated to the theatre over the years. He is a valued friend of the theatre. Jim and the community have supported The Monday Club and we hope the cost-friendly initiative continues to grow over the coming years.”

The Monday Club, which attracted over 200 visitors in March, returns on Monday 6th June at 2pm. Tickets cost £2.50 for members and £3.50 for non-members.
